Modems

The modem is what your computer uses to connect to your phone line. Most modems you purchase today are 56K/V90 modems. Most ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) require at least a 33.6K modem to connect, but there are some ISP’s that let you connect at slower speeds.

It is a good idea to have a surge protector that also has a phone line connection.  This prevents an electrical surge from your phone line wiping out your modem.  I have seen this happen MANY times!  If you don't have a surge protector with a phone line connection, if you unplug your system during a thunder storm, remember to unplug your modem too!  This will prevent you modem from getting fried!  A good surge protector costs around $25.00.
